When we consider animals, a dog is taken to be a mans best friend. They play a very important role in our lives. A lot of people like to domesticate a dog as they help in various tasks like hunting, herding, and companionship and over all the protection of a person. All these are activities which they have been doing since time immemorial. But in recent times they have taken up other roles such as assisting military and police and also being an important aid to the physically challenged individual. There are many breeds of dogs which people like to keep as pets in their house. Over all these years environmental factors such as changes in the habitats and cross breeding have resulted in many different varieties of dogs to come up. This new evolution is well known for their intelligence, loyalty and fun loving nature. We shall now discuss some famous dog breeds which have become quite famous amongst the masses.

The very first breed we will talk about is the German Sheppard. This breed is also most commonly known as an Alsatian. This a new breed of dogs which people have started keeping as pets as initially they were used for the purpose of herding as well as guarding sheep. Due to the excessive strength, obedience and intelligence they are often enrolled and engaged for military and police activities all across the world. Its intelligence taken together with its fearless nature makes it a useful guard dog. Hence people consider it to be the one of the most popular breeds of dogs. We thereafter have yet another breed which is known as the Labrador retriever. This dog breed was developed for the retrieval of fishing nets. They are differentiated from the other breeds by their webbed paws which help them to swim. Like the German Sheppard this breed is also know for its role in military and police. Along with this quality these dogs are very kind, compassionate as well as loving to their masters.

Another breed is the Doberman pinscher. This is also known as the Doberman and is a very popular breed of dog among the people. They were originally developed in the year 1890 and were commonly used as guard dogs and police dogs. This breed has lessened in number in spite of them being alert, intelligent as well as loyal companion dogs.

The fourth breed is known as the poodle. This breed is also known for its intelligence and is found in various sizes and coat colours. They were originally also known as water dogs however now they are now also known as companion dogs. This breed is very skilful in several dog sports, which involve agility, tracking, obedience as well as herding.

One breed which is classified by the blockbuster movie Beethoven, is the St. Bernard which happens to be one of the most compassionate breed of dogs. They were originally used as the rescue dogs in the ice covered terrains of the Italian as well as Swiss Alps. This breed has been credited to have saved numerous lives of people trapped in snow, during rough weather conditions. Apart from the above Rottweiler, Border Collie, Golden Retriever and Dalmatians are some other popular dog breeds.
